The Best Cardio Workouts for Weight Loss

At Xercise4Less Gyms we know there are no short cuts to losing excess weight, but some cardio exercises are more effective at helping you with weight loss than others. We want you to train smarter so we’ve picked out some of the best cardio workouts for weight loss so you can really burn off some unwanted fat. Lose weight safely and quickly with these three types of cardiovascular sessions that get to work on your love handles. Burn more calories and increase your anaerobic threshold on cardio machines like the elliptical, stepper or stationary bike. Ready to activate your calorie-burning hormones? Read on to find the best cardio sessions for shifting belly fat and every other kind of fat!

HIIT Weight Loss Exercises

There’s no doubting the fat burning effectiveness of a vigorous HIIT cardio workout. Once you get into your anaerobic zone (where you find it hard to hold a conversation) your body will burn plenty of calories during the workout and even better continue to burn fat after your cardio gym session is over. The higher intensity periods of a HIIT workout creates a metabolic demand that helps long-term fat loss and improves your overall conditioning at the same time. You can use your own bodyweight or any cardio equipment in the gym like the rowing machine or treadmill to gain the benefits of a HIIT session. A HIIT cardio workout can be anywhere from 5-30 minutes and you can use any cardio machine you like; the key is intensity. Work out for 20 seconds of maximum effort with 40 seconds of rest. Do as many rounds as you can in the time you have in the gym and you’ll burn tons of calories. Incorporate a HIIT session into your exercise programme at your Xercise4Less gym but make sure not to overdo it with no more than 3 of these cardio workouts a week.

HIIT Battleropes

EMOM Cardio Workout for Fat Loss

An EMOM workout is perfect for when you just have 10-20 minutes in the gym. But what does EMOM stand for? Every Minute On the Minute. You complete a set of cardio exercises within 60 seconds, then at the start of the next minute do it all over again. These cardio sessions are great for burning calories as it requires more physical effort to keep a hard pace with each succeeding minute. You can do an EMOM cardio session to help weight loss using your own bodyweight or work out on any cardio machine. It’s completely flexible; you get to choose your favourite cardio exercises. Just focus on keeping a consistent pace for each minute interval. For example, at your local Xercise4Less gym you could do 5 press-ups, 5 jump squats, 5 chest-to-floor burpees and 4 beast holds every minute for ten minutes as fast as you can. Recover and continue to shed calories.

Lose More Weight with LISS Cardio Session

Low-Intensity Steady State or LISS is a return to the old-fashioned weight loss values of steady state cardio exercises like jogging. Ideal for when you can take 30-45 minutes for a gym cardio workout, LISS aims for a lower level of physical exertion than either EMOM or HIIT but you still gain the weight loss benefits through a longer exercise period. LISS can kick-start weight loss while putting far less strain on your joints than other cardio exercise sessions and you may even find it easier to stick to your exercise plan when you include more Low-Intensity Steady State cardio. With a workout intensity of about 60 percent of your maximal heart-rate effort, you stay in the fat burning zone for an extended period of time with LISS. Try LISS workouts on the treadmill, rowing machine, elliptical, or stair-stepping machines to start reducing your body fat at your nearest Xercise4Less gym.

Boosting Your Stamina for a Long Distance Race

Training for Your Next Big Run at Xercise4Less

When it comes to a long distance run, preparation is the most important part. Whether you’re running a 5k, 10k, half marathon or a marathon in the coming months, all of the hard work before the race is what will make you perform better and achieve your personal goals.

At Xercise4Less Gyms, we have the equipment to support your training and help you to get race fit. Our variety of gym zones including Cardio Machines, Resistance Machines, Free Weights, Ladies Only, Spin Studios and Exercise Studios can all contribute to your improved fitness.

Man using Battleropes and Prowler

Working on Fitness to Improve Running Time

Whilst you’re going to be taking part in a long distance race, there is a variety of training that you can do. Yes, treadmill workouts are an important part on your preparation but by working on your general fitness and stamina, you’ll get the results you want. To do this, you should aim to do a mixture of cardio workouts, strength training and HIIT workouts.

By using cardio equipment such as Cross Trainers, Rowing Machines and Stair Masters, you’ll boost the strength of your heart which will improve your stamina over time. Having a strong stamina is really important for long distance running because this is what we keep you going – that and mental strength! Also try HIIT workouts (high intensity interval training). This can really shock your heart and push you to your limits. Aim to incorporate this type of training into your workout routine at least once a week. This will have a positive impact on your stamina even though your workout will be over a shorter period of time.

When you use the treadmill, try interval training. This means changing the speed from walking to jogging to sprinting and repeating that process. Doing this will boost your overall fitness and while it’s unlikely that you’ll be sprinting the whole distance of a marathon or 10k, it’ll mean that you’re able to pick the pace up from time to time because you’ve had plenty of practice. Also, try to set yourself small challenges throughout the training process.

Weight training is important and shouldn’t be missed. Strengthening your legs is important but aim to have a strong upper body and core too – all of this will contribute your success. At Xercise4Less Gyms, we have quality equipment in our free weights and resistance machines areas such as bench press, shoulder press, barbells, dumbbells and much more. Whilst strength training doesn’t need to be a key focus, incorporating it into your workout routine will only benefit your stamina and overall fitness.

Calling All the Ladies

At the People’s Gym, we take pride in our inclusivity. We offer Ladies Only sections in the majority of Xercise4Less gyms meaning that women can train for anything from a 5k to a marathon in the comfort of a smaller and more comfortable environment.

Ladies Only zones typically have cardio and free weights equipment (dumbbells, kettlebells, barbells). Using the weights will help you to strengthen your muscles which will benefit you during the race. Strong legs will work in your favour and mean that you’re able to run for a longer period of time. Resistance machines such as leg press, leg extension and leg curl will be really helpful or you could use barbells for squats and lunges too.

Resistance Training Is Key For Your Weight Loss

Resistance training - leg press
Resistance training - main

Burn the calories with resistance workouts

You may have heard the phrase ‘muscle burns fat’ but what does that actually mean? Resistance training helps you build muscle and the more muscle mass you have, the more calories your body will burn at rest. Why? Simply put, muscle burns a much higher percentage of calories at rest than body fat which expends far fewer calories. Each pound of muscle on your body uses about 30-60 calories per day. So, if resistance training can get your metabolism firing 24 hours of the day, even when you’re just sitting around on the sofa, you’ll find yourself burning calories. That’s why a resistance training workout is the exercise routine you need if you’re trying to lose excess weight.

Resistance training - leg press

The weight training afterburn

Cardio is an important part of any weight loss gym programme but when you’re done on the elliptical machine, your calorie-burning time is pretty much done too. It’s not quite the same with a strength training workout. With resistance training you’ll benefit from the fabled afterburn effect or EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption). That means you’ll continue to burn calories for at least an hour after you’ve finished a fitness session in your Xercise4Less gym. Depending on the intensity and length of your weight training you can in fact enjoy a post-exercise calorie combustion of up to 48 hours. Just think, you could be sleeping and fat burning at the same time! If weight loss is a goal of yours, incorporating strength training into your fitness routine is a real no-brainer.

Resistance training for better health

This may be an obvious point but it’s one still worth making; resistance training makes you stronger and fitter for everyday life. Lifting weights or doing bodyweight exercises will of course add tone and definition to your muscles so you look good, but it will also make lifting, bending, and pulling far easier too. Your general health and wellbeing will also be enhanced as strength training protects your bone health and muscle mass, particularly important as we age. Work out using resistance training and you’ll develop better body mechanics and enjoy better balance. Weight training will even improve your mood and boost your energy. That’s why a great Xercise4Less Gyms exercise program for weight loss will always include some resistance training.

The Benefits Of Mixed Martial Arts Training

Benefits of MMA training - main

The physical benefits of MMA fitness

Want to improve your fitness through combat? Xercise4Less gyms feature a dedicated combat zone with a boxing ring and MMA cage. Combat training is one of the most intense workouts, designed to work every part of your body. Kick, punch and grapple to build up your legs, arms and core.

Giving your body a full workout will help to blast the calories, shed fat and improve your cardiovascular fitness to really get your heart pumping. Whether you are new to fitness, or a seasoned pro, MMA training caters for all needs and there is no limit on how hard you can push yourself through MMA fitness.

Benefits of MMA training - kicks

Improve your strength in the Xercise4Less combat zone

Step into the MMA cage at your local Xercise4Less Gyms to build-up your strength. Give your body a complete workout and focus your attention on all the key muscle groups. Combining the explosive power of boxing and kickboxing with the enduring strength needed for grappling make MMA training a key component for building your functional strength.

Benefits of MMA training - sparring

Clear your head with MMA fitness

Due to the intense nature of combat training, and specifically MMA training, you will need to implement all your focus into your exercise, giving you the full physical and mental benefits of this type of workout. For most people, combat training is stepping out of their comfort zone, which can be very challenging, but it can also be a great way to boost your self-esteem and confidence.

Regular exercise is a sure-fire way to release endorphins and reduce stress. Practicing an activity such as MMA on a regular basis is not only beneficial to your physical health, but for your mental health and wellbeing, too.

Build your social network through combat training

Whilst you can shadow a lot of MMA exercises, it is not the same as having a sparring partner or if you like, an opponent. Get one of your friends to join you in the octagon and don a pair of pads for you to kick and punch, working those muscle groups and improving your fitness. As well as delivering obvious physical benefits, MMA training can be a fun way of getting to meet new people in the gym. You can easily rotate the exercises between yourself and your partner, think of it as a rest break, ready to push yourself to the limit the next time you’re up!

If you feel comfortable enough to try contact exercises with your sparring partner, then grapple exercises are as effective as any for burning calories and giving you the physical workout you are craving.

A rigorous workout, combat exercises such as boxing and MMA maximise your calorie burn, both during and after your workout. Not only does combat training boost your cardiovascular fitness, it is also a great source of muscle toning and developing your bones and ligaments. Reduce stress with intense physical activity

Intense physical activity such as boxing can help to decrease your stress levels. Exercise increases endorphins to boost your mood and improve your sleep, all of which helps to reduces stress. Boxing is a great outlet for stress as you typically transition between high intensity bouts of exercise and moderate intensity recovery periods. When you are exercising in the high intensity period, your mind will be focused on the task at hand and not worrying about whether you have locked your car door, left your phone at home or remembered to take the rubbish out. During rest periods, you will be able to remain focused on the task at hand, ensuring you are recovering to go through the next phase of boxing fitness. This all helps to lower your stress levels and maintain your focus.

Boxing Fit - Equipment

Boxing clever: improve your hand-eye coordination

Not only does boxing offer physical fitness benefits, it also works to improve your balance and coordination, making your reaction times and reflexes a lot sharper. If you are punching the bags or sparring with a partner, you must be able to repeatedly hit a target, and hit that target whilst it is moving. Having faster reaction times will help boost your physical coordination, and this is particularly beneficial to an individual through age as it will help to reduce the risk of falling.

Boxing Fit - Sparring

Building strength through combat fitness

In addition to burning calories and fat as well as your general fitness and wellbeing, boxing also significantly helps to increase your strength. Due to the high-intense nature of the activity, boxing works a range of muscles, so you’ll really be able to pack a punch. During a boxing workout, you may punch or kick a bag multiple times, requiring your whole body to be put through its paces.

Calorie Deficit vs. Calorie Surplus

How do you lose weight or gain weight easily?

We all train for different reasons and we all have personal fitness goals we want to achieve and at Xercise4Less Gyms, we want to help. Whether you’re new to exercise, a casual gym goer or a gym enthusiast, it’s important to know how nutrition can impact your weight.

If your biggest fitness goal is to lose weight, you need to make sure that you burn more calories than you consume every day. This is called a calorie deficit.

A calorie deficit doesn’t mean you need to spend hours in the gym – you just need to be generally more active. This could mean spending just 30 minutes exercising every day maybe doing a high intensity workout (weight training or cardio training) but also walking 10,000 steps a day and generally moving more. By keeping a track of your food intake on an app like MyFitnessPal, you’ll know exactly what you’re eating and how many calories you need to burn to make sure that you’re losing weight.

If your personal fitness goal is to gain weight, you need to be in a calorie surplus. This means that you’re eating more calories than you’re burning.

A calorie surplus doesn’t just mean eating more food and exercising less because it’s important that you maintain a regular workout routine and stay active and healthy. Whether you prefer to use weights when you’re training or stick to cardio, train in a way to suit you whilst making note of the food you’re eating.

Burning calories at Xercise4Less

Nutrition is an important part of your weight loss journey, so aim to find a good balance between your gym workouts and your diet. Establishing a gym routine alongside a healthy diet will only help you achieve goals quicker.

In Xercise4Less Gyms, we have a range of facilities to help with weight loss. Cardio zones encourage you to burn calories and transform your fitness with treadmills, rowers and steppers. Resistance machines and free weights also aid weight loss over a longer period of time. Don’t be afraid of using weights and doing strength training, it all helps to burn calories and add lean muscle.

We also run a wide range of exercise classes that will support your fitness journey. If you’re stuck for what to do in the gym or fancy something a little bit different, try a class. High intensity classes such as Zumba, Indoor Cycling and Power Pump will help you burn a high number of calories in a short period of time. You may have tried these online now so why not give them a go once we re-open too?

Group Exercise Class

Gaining weight and muscle using Xercise4Less

If your main goal is to generally gain muscle and weight, we have some great equipment at Xercise4Less Gyms that could help. Within your great value membership, you can do progressive weight training using free weights and resistance machines to support your fitness journey.

By using equipment like dumbbells, kettlebells, barbells and resistance machines such as the leg press, bench press and lat pulldown, you can build and maintain muscle. Our cardio zones can still be useful – to build your general fitness and stamina meaning that you can lift heavier weights and for longer. Generally, low intensity workouts are better suited to you and your weight gain goals though.
