Shape your body at Xercise4Less Gyms

If you are just beginning your bodybuilding journey, or want to dramatically change your physique through fitness, then we have some top tips to help you meet all your training goals here at Xercise4Less Gyms. These tips will help you a lot, but please, do not expect instant results. Muscle mass naturally develops at a slow rate, so it is important to have patience, keep focused and stick to your regimes. The results will come!

1. Learn the correct form

It is highly tempting to start with higher weights in the quest for faster results. Whilst this may be a devilish temptation, it is one you must refrain from giving in to. On one hand, you know your own body better than anyone, but also you must be aware of your limitations and know that the key to success is to build muscle at a gradual rate. The best practice for bodybuilding is to start with lower weights, learning the correct form of each exercise you participate in. Having the correct form is vital as you will begin to build the muscle you want to achieve, as well as lessening the risk of potential injury or discomfort by having a poor technique.

If you are unsure on the correct form, feel free to speak to our friendly staff for advice, or have a word with people in the gym. There will be someone who has been in your position, and able to guide you through any exercise you are unsure of. Our friendly, inclusive environment means we are open to all levels of fitness with a culture you can grow in and broaden your social network through fitness.

2. Have a program and stick to it

Having a plan and being able to implement it into your workout is arguably the most critical part of attending the gym. Before you come and start your session, you must know what it is you want to achieve and how you intend on going about doing it. You should not just turn up to the gym and do whatever you see fit at that given moment. If you come with this attitude then you are likely to make elementary mistakes, hampering your bodybuilding progress and even risk injuring yourself in the process.

Your bodybuilding program should include the exact exercises you need to do to achieve your results, the number of sets and reps and what you will do in each session. Like with learning the correct form, there will always be a member of staff of an advanced bodybuilding member on hand to give you any support or answer questions you may have.

3. Be in a caloric surplus

The simple principle of building muscle from a nutritional perspective is to eat more calories than you burn. The best way to achieve accurate results is to find out your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) and measure that according to how active you are. If you have a passive job, or one where you are sat down for most of your day then you will need to take on board fewer calories than someone who has a more active profession. On a typical day you should be looking to have four or five meals, eating every three to four hours. Avoid being hungry as it could restrict or hamper your training session.

4. Gradually increase the weights

Once you have become comfortable with your program, it is then advisable to lift the intensity by increasing the weights. This should be done periodically, giving yourself small but realistic targets to achieve the next phase of your bodybuilding journey. Make a note of how much you are able to lift on each exercise you complete, and slightly increase the weight every couple of weeks. This will help you to improve your strength and lead to muscle gains, putting you well on track to smash your fitness targets.

5. Rest and recover

There is no shame in having a day off or a rest day when you are bodybuilding. You do not have to hammer the weights every single day, and your body needs time to repair. One of the best ways to recover is by getting plenty of sleep on a night. A rough guide would be to try and get around 8 hours of sleep per night. You should also recover by adapting your lifestyle to suit your training, avoiding smoking, alcohol and other typically unhealthy habits. You will find a routine that best suits you, fitting in the gym around work and family life can be difficult, but in order to gain the optimum results you will have to make some sacrifices along the way.

Bodybuilding: The Mental And Physical Benefits

Bodybuilding - main
Bodybuilding - woman lifting

An introduction to bodybuilding

There is often a negative stigma surrounding body building, and those who dedicate their lives to improving their fitness through perceived extreme exercise. However, this is not necessarily the case. Bodybuilding is a great way to keep yourself balanced, giving your body proportion, shaping and helping general fitness. Not only does body building improve your physical condition, it can also lead to mental health benefits, giving you a clearer state of mind thanks to weight training and aerobic exercise. Having a well-balanced, proportioned body can contribute to heightened health, lessening the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and raised cholesterol levels. Bodybuilding captures all your fitness goals by giving you the physical improvements, boosting your state of mind and also ensuring you remain on the ball with your diet to supplement all your hard work in the gym.

Improve your physical condition

First and foremost, the main benefit of bodybuilding is to enhance your physical condition through exceptional fitness and dedication. This has a healthy impact on your bones and joints, giving you the necessary balance across your body in order to remain strong and flexible. As you begin to embark on your bodybuilding journey, you will notice a dramatic increase in muscle, strength and endurance – but this is a slow process and you will have to remain patient. Results simply do not happen overnight and training all areas of your body is essential to maintaining a balanced physique.

At your local Xercise4Less gym we have a wide range of fitness equipment for you to build the body you want. This spans from cardio through to resistance and TRX, ensuring you have all the tools you could possibly need to get the most from your workout. Our dedicated training zones are extremely spacious, so you will not have to wait to get on your favourite piece of equipment.

If you’re looking to add strength and muscle mass, the weight and resistance area provides the ideal environment for you to achieve those goals. Additionally, you will also need to get your cardio sessions in and we have the variety of equipment to make your training both fun and functional.

When participating in physical exercise, your body releases Endorphin. This works to influence your mood, helping you to sleep better, reduce fatigue and relieve any psychological tension or stress.

Boost your mental health through balanced fitness

Having a balanced physical condition will help you to become more aligned with yourself and give you a mental boost to clear your head and make sure you keep your focus and determination to meet all your fitness requirements. Bodybuilding is certainly not an easy process, and you must maintain the desire to succeed and set yourself small, attainable targets to remain on track.

Weight training and aerobic exercise can boost our mind and cognitive wellbeing. Going to the gym can relieve stress, anxiety and depression. Seeing real results can improve your mood and give you a sense of satisfaction to further progress and develop through fitness. Bodybuilding can enhance your self-esteem and confidence by giving you a more positive outlook on your own image. This will happen through the result of changes in your body such as weight loss, feeling your body becoming leaner, stronger and more flexible.

Furthermore, bodybuilding does not just happen in the gym. You can take your experiences from fitness into your daily activities. For example, it can help you to make better decisions and cope with negative emotions more rationally, enabling you to see positives or find solutions.

How nutrition can give you a helping hand

While the majority of the hard yards are put in during your fitness sessions in the gym, it is impossible to ignore the importance of your nutrition – not just when bodybuilding – but in everyday life. Healthy nutrition and rest are vitally important when bodybuilding as the foods you eat can play havoc with your thinking and your memory. The fuel you intake can influence how your brain and mind function.

It is advisable to eat foods which are rich in antioxidants as they can benefit your focus and memory. As you can imagine, foods such as fruit and veg are ideal for bodybuilding, supplying you with glucose to keep your energy levels up. Lean meat, poultry, potatoes, cheese and fish are also good sources of nutrition to help your bodybuilding journey. In terms of what you should drink, water is as good as anything as it is crucial for a healthy body and mind. Avoid drinking alcohol if possible. Staying hydrated provides so many health benefits and this is equally as important as what you eat.

Conclusion

All elements of fitness are important to bodybuilding but having a healthy body and healthy mind will serve you well for the rest of your days. Weight training and aerobic exercise deliver both strength and energy, giving you the best possible chance of boosting your self-esteem and giving you the motivation to further your fitness. With a balanced level of fitness, you will be fully in control of your life, mind and body.

Weight Loss Success Story – Stacey Robertson

Old holiday pictures helped kick start my weight loss journey

Sheffield Hillsborough member Stacey Robertson used old holiday pictures as inspiration to begin her weight loss journey. Seeing older pictures made Stacey want to improve her fitness and burn calories to help transform her life. Changing her fitness through the gym has been challenging, but also extremely rewarding for Stacey.

“I kept looking at old holiday pictures and knew I had to change things to feel better about myself. It feels good when you reach targets, and amazing when you exceed them.”

Using Xercise4Less fitness classes to shed the pounds

Xercise4Less gyms offer an array of fitness classes to help get you on the way with bolstering your fitness. Stacey found HIIT, abs blast and 15/15/15 classes the most effective for weight loss. She also used dumbbells to help tone and turn excess fat into muscle. Over a period of time, Stacey gradually lost her target weight of 3-5 stone.

Finding that inner motivation

Starting the process can often be the most difficult, finding motivation and strength to get through the early phase of your fitness journey. For Stacey, this was no different.

“When I first started, the aching and constant hunger made me feel like giving up. I was consuming around 3000 calories per day and my BMR is only 1500. This was the hardest part for me.”

Making sacrifices to achieve results

Anyone embarking on a weight loss journey needs to make sacrifices. Whether it is giving up certain foods, drinking or making the necessary changes to your lifestyle. Stacey got herself out of the old routine of comfort eating to supplement the hard work she was putting in the gym.

“I needed to give up comfort eating. I was eating when I was happy and sad. Sometimes you don’t want to turn to a salad or something healthy in the evening. You just want comforting carbs like chips or pizza.”

As with any change in lifestyle or diet, adaptations have to be made. Stacey may have found it difficult in the beginning, but once she got herself acclimatised with her new fitness regime, she began to notice the benefits.

“I got new-found energy and no longer felt sluggish or tired after eating.”

Great work, Stacey!

Weight Loss Success Story – Beth Whithorn

Devising a fitness plan to see visible results

Having a consistent workout and fitness plan has helped Chesterfield member Beth Whithorn stay on track of her target of ten stone weight loss. Understandably, this has been a long battle for Beth, and she has endured many ups and downs along the way.

Beth usually participates in a weights session at the gym, as she believes that delivered better results for her. However, she also goes on the treadmill to help improve her cardiovascular fitness as well as targeted weight loss.

“I feel that mostly weights work best for me as I feel that’s where I started noticing the results. An average gym session would consist of 10 minutes on the treadmill at the highest incline followed by an arms, legs and bum or back workout.”

Remain patient and stick to your goals

Making progress can often be in small steps, and for Beth this is no different. She has found gradual progression has worked better for her.

“I started noticing results about six weeks into my journey. I noticed I wasn’t getting out of breath when walking up the stairs. I also noticed my clothes were not as tight, which made me feel a lot more confident. About six months into my journey I was able to buy clothes in most shops again and not have to buy from plus size sections.”

Recovering from setbacks

As previously mentioned, Beth noticed results improved over a period, giving her the confidence and enthusiasm to follow her journey. Whilst there is still a further target in mind, Beth is happy with the progress she has currently made but is in no doubt about where she wants to go from here.

“I would like to lose a further two stone to hit my ideal goal of a ten stone loss since starting my journey. I would also like to become fitter and healthier, building my strength back up as I am currently on a break from the gym as I am unwell and awaiting surgery at the beginning of February. I am already missing the gym and can’t wait to be back there doing the things I love.”

Keep going, Beth!

Weight Loss Success Story – Samantha Hunt

Using cardio to improve fitness

The thought of an intense cardio workout can often be daunting or intimidating. For Samantha, she has found cardio workouts to be the most effective for weight loss. Sticking to similar training patterns, routines and outputs for her results.

“I tend to stick to an hour and a half of cardio when I go to the gym. This is normally made up of 30 minutes on the bike, 30 minutes on the treadmill and 30 minutes on the stepper. To have variety when I’m exercising, I often mix it up by doing a walk on incline, sprints and interval training.”

“In future, I would like to attend the classes but right now it is difficult to fit them around my shifts.”

Supportive gym, supportive friend

Here at Xercise4Less gyms we are all about friendly service and an inclusive feel, generating a comfortable atmosphere for all our members to work out in. Samantha found this particularly resonated with her weight loss journey, as she remarked on the environment created by our helpful, professional staff.

“The staff are always happy to help and are very friendly. It makes a massive difference! Having the separate female only zone also helps a lot.”

As well as finding help through Xercise4Less, Samantha has enjoyed sharing her fitness journey with a close friend, who has also supported her along the way.

“Going with my friend has supported me during this journey because during days where I’ve really felt like I’m lacking motivation, having the support from my friend, knowing we’re going together gives me the boost to just get to the gym. When I’m at the gym, I usually have the motivation to have a good session!”

Cleaning up eating habits

Eating well is also important to a fitness journey, as you want to supplement your exercise with a healthy diet. Samantha has made a conscious effort to improve her diet so that her hard work in the gym has the best chance to pay off.

“I’ve made a change to my eating habits. I find going to the gym and working hard to burn calories makes it easier to stick to better eating.”

“I also try and go to the gym on days off instead of previously, I would opt for a cinema trip or have a lazy day in front of the TV!”

Slow and steady wins the race

It can be difficult to stay motivated or keep the faith, especially when you don’t instantly see results. Typically, positive weight loss results do not happen overnight, and it is a gradual process. As difficult as it may seem at the time, you must keep searching for the drive to succeed. It might not be a visible result, as Samantha can recall, she found she was able to perform exercises for longer and that kickstarted her motivation to continue.

“Sometimes I do really struggle with motivation. My weight can often be up and down due to shifts at work, and unpredictable sleeping patterns. When I feel like this, I just remind myself of how far I have come and even if I go to the gym and only do a 30-minute workout, it is still 30 minutes more than if I hadn’t gone. I track my workouts on my Fitbit, so this keeps me motivated as I can see progress.”

“I had a few weeks off over Christmas, so I am feeling it at the moment. I enjoy seeing results. For example, a few months ago I could only do 5 minutes on the stepper – now I can get up to an hour!”

Great work, Samantha!

Xercise4Less Transformation Camps pushed me to my limit: now I feel great

Intense exercise can often be daunting, gruelling and quite frankly, a true test of your character. Thankfully for Sunderland member Kate, she channelled her inner belief to get through a transformation camp and is now reaping the rewards of all the hard yards. She has done incredibly well to lose 11lbs in just 8 weeks.

“I would say that I couldn’t have lost the weight without doing the X4L transformation camp. I’ve tried other things in the past, but this has really worked for me. The amazing PT’s push you to your absolute limits, but that’s what I go for!”

Kate enjoyed the transformation camp so much she has signed up for her second.

“I’m on my second camp now, so hopefully I’ll see even more changes!”

The struggles of a snack heavy working environment

Juggling your fitness around a busy life can often be challenging. Kate has found many difficulties with her job, working in a school. She kindly explained those to us.

“I definitely faced struggles along the way. I work in a school and there is always cakes, biscuits and sweets in the staff room. The children also bring in lots of snacks to share too – it was difficult to resist!”

“There were days after work where I didn’t feel up to coming to camp and just wanted to sleep. I pushed myself to go because I wanted results. I attend the camp three times a week, and also tried to get in at least one other gym session or additional camp.”

A massive well done to Kate for her amazing hard work!

Body transformation camps: the key to successful weight loss

“I started attending body transformation camps at Xercise4Less at the end of 2018 after I saw holiday pictures of myself and it hit home how much weight I had gained.”

“My main downfall has always been ‘comfort’ eating, especially when stressed. I would eat chocolate, crisps and all the other usual suspects.”

Following this realisation, Jay sought help from a Personal Trainer to get his fitness journey started and give him the guidance to start losing the weight he wanted to.

“With the help of my PT’s and other members of the group, I was able to change my attitude to food by tracking my calories in the gym’s food app. I didn’t follow any fad diets, but simply stuck to a calorie deficit and was sensible with the amount of ‘treats’ I allowed myself in a week.”

“My biggest weight loss was 2 stone in one camp. I’ve also had camps where I lost nothing at all, because I let my routine slip again. You just have to pick yourself up and get back into the right frame of mind – don’t give up!”

Having a community spirit at the gym to get you through the tough times

Whilst losing weight was always the priority for Jay, he has also benefitted from the community spirit at gym brings, being part of a team ethos and an environment full of like-minded people in similar positions. This is something Jay felt was integral to his weight loss.

“Having a trained PT set out the exercises combined with the fun group atmosphere really helped me to continue attending the gym. I feel so much happier and healthier as a result, not to mention making friends for life!”

“Whatever your level of fitness or confidence, the camps are a great way to get started at the gym and I would recommend them to anyone.”

Well done, Jay!

'Tackling A Long Term Weight Issue'

Weight Loss Success Story - Andy Toynton

Xercise4Less Burnley member Andy Toynton has had a long-term battle with his weight, trying various diets and programmes which have not been successful for him. This led to Andy having a ‘final straw’ moment and getting on top of his physical health by using his family as the motivational tool to embark on his weight loss journey.

“I want to be able to set a good example to my family and not only lose the weight but also manage to keep it off as I have failed with previous attempts. This has been an ongoing battle for a number of years.”

“I also don’t want to look fat in my swimming shorts on holiday. The turning point for me was when my son asked me if I was having a baby.”

Andy’s ultimate goal is to lose up to 3 stone, and he is well on his way to achieving this. Noticing results within 3 months has helped Andy to keep his confidence and motivation up to reach and surpass his targets.

Family Support And Learning From The Past

We all need support and a gee-up from our loved ones from time to time. Andy was given a huge lift when his wife decided to join the gym and help support him through his weight loss journey. This was a real confidence boost and pivotal moment for Andy.

“My wife joined the gym as well in order to support me. My whole family have been very supportive, even if there are too many carbs in the house!”

“Unfortunately, in the past, I have had my fair share of injuries which has not helped me to get the weight off or stay fit.

'Fitness Classes Helped Me Reach Targets'

Andy found that attending a range of our fitness classes helped him make positive strides in his weight loss journey, giving him confidence and energy to make his goals become a reality.

“I attended classes to help improve my fitness. I went to HIIT, indoor cycling, BODYPUMP and BODYCOMBAT classes.  I wanted to mix up my training and test myself.”

Classes are a great way of exercising, as you can seek advice and support from your peers as well as fitness professionals. All our classes strive to provide a friendly, inclusive service whilst delivering functionality and success for each individual.

For Andy, attending the gym a few times a week enabled him to notice progression and his varied training of classes and doing cardio work on the treadmill offered a successful routine, sustaining heightened fitness over a period of time. This is something Andy is grateful for.

“Xercise4Less are run by a friendly bunch of professionals who give encouragement, advice and motivation to keep me focused.”

Excellent Work, Andy!

'Feeling Uncomfortable On Holiday'

Weight Loss Success Story - Georgia Simpson

For many of us, we want to look and feel our best for our well deserved holiday. A holiday is supposed to be a time where we totally switch off, relax and spend time with our family and friends. Unfortunately, Doncaster member Georgia Simpson spent the most of her holiday wanting to improve her health and well-being.

“I went to Florida in September 2019 and just didn’t feel comfortable or healthy. Nothing felt as easy to do as it did before. Things like exercising, buying nice clothes and even crossing my legs was a struggle.”

“When I saw the pictures I decided something needed to be done before it got too late. It made me finally accept I was bigger than I thought I was.”

Starting My Weight Loss With Xercise4Less Gyms

After her holiday, Georgia got herself signed up to the gym and began to start her fitness journey. Small steps were taken to help her to begin to feel confident and focused on the task at hand.

“I wanted to lose 3 to 5 stone.”

Georgia used weights and resistance machines to kick start her regime, finding them extremely beneficial and noticing results quite quickly.

“I found the dumbbells the best piece of equipment for weight loss. I noticed results and the praise I received from other people motivated me to continue.”

We know losing weight is a real difficult battle, and the diet can be more problematic than the exercising. This is something Georgia knew she had to grasp in order to reach her targets and goals.

“I had to be strict on my diet. I started to see results and although I had a spell where I went off the rails a bit, I then became more conscious about what I was eating.”

“My diet gave me more energy, especially due to eating whole foods rather than processed food. I also reduced my sugar intake and cut out junk completely.”

Working out at Xercise4Less has helped provide Georgia with confidence and the ability to train in a friendly, inclusive environment.

“The Xercise4Less community is friendly, I like how I can come to the gym and get on with my own workout and other people around me seem to do the same.”

Finding Motivation And Self Belief

It is one thing to begin a fitness journey, and another to perservere with it. Having unconditional support from your family and friends can help spur you on to perform above your expectation levels, and guide you to your targets on days where you are finding it difficult or contemplating excuses to avoid going to the gym.

Throughout her weight loss battle, Georgia has always had the support of her family, especially her parents.

“Everyone has been so supportive. My parents said I looked so much happier and healthier because of the weight loss. This meant a lot to me.”

“There were times of struggle. Sometimes motivation to go to the gym is lacking when you’re busy with work but I always feel better after I’ve been and I use that as motivation to go.”

The Next Step Of The Journey

Whilst she has made incredible progress, Georgia still feels she has a way to go to be at her optimum weight.

“I feel really good but I’m not there yet. I feel so much better and happier. I would just like to lose a little bit more.”

Keep going, Georgia!

Weight Loss Success Story – John Jordan

Weight Loss Success Story - John Jordan

'Lose weight or risk Diabetes'

Weight Loss Success Story - John Jordan

Health is arguably the most important commodity in life. When this is jeopardised, we realise there is no alternative but to amend our ways. Xercise4Less Wigan member John Jordan was severely at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. He knew at this point he had to do something about his weight.

“In December 2018, after a blood test, my doctor told me that I was at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It was this that convinced me to do something about my weight to improve my health.”

This was obviously a massive shock to John, and gave him the impetus to start a fitness regime, subsequently joining our Wigan club in his quest to lose up to 4 stone.

Starting My Weight Loss Journey With Xercise4Less Gyms

At the age of 42, John had never been in a gym before and wanted to be part of an environment where he felt welcome and be given the confidence to succeed on his weight loss journey.

“It was difficult at first because of my weight and my age, but all the staff and the PT were extremely helpful, taking time to show me how to use all the machines and equipment.”

John also revealed how he struggled with certain exercises, but was ably assissted by the PT in order to ensure he performed the exercise correctly and it would be beneficial for him to achieve his goals.

“I particularly remember trying to do a plank on the first day and was very unsuccessful. Since then, my PT has helped me with my technique and to gradually lift heavier weights. He is also readily available on social media and over the phone if I need him.”

The friendly, inclusive nature of Xercise4Less has provided John with the comfort of being able to perform the exercises he needs to do, in the time frame he wants to do them, and without feeling the pressure of being intimidated by the presence of supremely fit or muscle-bound people.

Developing Fitness With Specific Gym Workouts

In order to succeed in his weight loss journey, John has a plan of action to attack each and every gym session he attends. He feels that weights and resistance training works best for him.

“I believe that working with weights has been the best solution for me. At first, I needed cardio to lose weight but my PT explained how lifting weights can burn more calories. I have gradually improved my technique and increased my weights with exercises such as; deadlifts, squats and shoulder presses.”

The Benefits Of Exercising: My Success Story

After training regularly for the best part of a year, John has seen a dramatic increase in his health. Not just through losing weight, but also his general physical condition and well-being have improved.

“Nearly a year to the day since I started working out, I took another blood test which found my blood sugar levels were at a normal, healthy rate. This meant I was no longer at risk of developing diabetes. I was amazed and so proud of myself for being able to accomplish this.”

In addition to his health being improved, John has new-found confidence in the way he looks and feels.

“I have a physically demanding job which has been made easier through weight loss and fitness. I look better and now I enjoy going into the studio at the gym and feel comfortable looking at my reflection in the mirror. It is a pleasure to work out in there now because of my improved physique.”

Great work, John!
